Invited by the Festival to present her solo R-A-U-X-A in 2022, the Catalan choreographer, dancer and performer returns to Marseille in a citadel opened specially for the occasion. Overlooking the old harbour, the fort, a listed monument since 1969, serves as a backdrop for an unclassifiable show inspired by public festivities, processions and parades. A large pop-up community will gather in this majestic setting that has borne witness to the history of Marseille since the seventeenth century. PARADES & DÉSOBEISSANCES brings together artists and local residents with a range of different performance skills to work on themes relating to rhythm and pulse in an exceptionally rich environment of sound. Rhythmic movements, choral chants and beats produced directly by the dancers come together in an original choreography designed as “a place where the collective body can be reinvented”. This new opus specially created by Aina Alegre for this remarkable venue, a combination of nature and stone with a powerful urban presence, will “make a new memory of the place through the physicality of collective movement and the multiple states in which a crowd can be present”: a grand communal gesture that is both unique and transitory.
